Chris remembers fruitcake being the running joke in the Christmas at Pee-wee’s Playhouse special. This one swaps out technicolor fruit with high-quality California dried fruit macerated in gold rum before everything is mixed up and baked. Still rich enough to be outlawed as it was in the past, slice thin to eat well.

Based on a homemade simpler, sweeter version that was a personal staple after long group cycling rides in young adulthood, Chris moved on to one fragrant with citrus as well as the original almond & anise. Glad to say he’s also shifted to home brew from instant “international” coffee long ago.
